Breaking Upwards

....cuz breaking up is hard to do

Nothing is forever. Or so they say. Does that making forever, nothing? In the sense that staying together ain’t nuthin? Like there ain’t nothing to it, but to do it?

Who knows…

This is for lovers of independent, low-budget film. Set in the always scenic New York City, where all great sad romantic comedies find themselves, this Daryl Wein film does what all great sad romantic comedies do; make you absolutely miserable. I swear I’d move to NYC just to have those backdrops for a one of a kind love affair, yeah. [/earth wind and fire]

Unlike it’s naturalistic predecessors however, (I’m thinking of one movie in particular, but after reading it on another site’s review, I don’t want to say it here because I’m freaked out at the possibility that I think like everyone else and we’re all brainwashed zombies)Breaking Upwards does not hide what it is about. It’s right there in the title.  You’re in for a gut-wrencher.

This is an honest portrayal of relationship death. But what makes it worth the watch is the struggle the characters Zoe Lister-Jones (co-writer) and Daryl Wein go through to keep their fading spark alive. There is an undeniable feeling of love between them. So much so that I wasn’t surprised at all to read that this is an auto-biographical script. Thelove is there. They knew how precious it was to them. They fought to keep their bond alive. Ultimately, spoiler alert for those who haven’t been reading closely or who think the title is preshadowing of a surprise twist ending, they lose their fight to stay together and go separate ways. Great supporting cast, even better banter between them. (Julie White TRANSFORMERS, Andrea Martin G.I.L.F.?, Peter Friedman THE SAVAGES, LaChanze, Olivia Thirlby JUNO, Pablo Shreiber THE WIRE, Heather Burns BORED TO DEATH). Gotta love good acting, even when, and maybe especially when it makes you feel powerful emotion; sad or not.

But life goes on…

on to the next one and…

stay open, there’s still time for eloping

lightning could strike on sand.

Haven’t figured out how to edit images on Mackenzie yet, so I’ll put up my rating system at work – whenever I actually go back.

3.5/5 Black Ties.

There’s also a mildly amusing rap video to go along with the flick. Starring one of my favs O. Thirlby! “Tight!

Peep it.

hit the jump for much more amusing reggae video. (peace to the indian guy from Office Space break dancing)

Stay classy you f’n d-faced fs,

The Last Waltz

For lovers of good music.

I know I wasn’t born yet. I know I’m not white. Heck, I call myself BLACK Ty for Mohammed’s sake; I’m aware of what is what. And what this right here is, is good music.

Find the movie. Find the music. I have no links for you this time. If you want it, you’ll find it.

The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian rock group, The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as the end of The Band’s illustrious touring career,[1] and the concert saw The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood and Neil Young.
The event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. The film features concert performances, scenes shot on a studio soundstage and interviews by Scorsese with members of The Band.

Bangkok Dangerous

would you retire already? how about Directing?

would you retire already? how about Directing?

“My name’s Joe. This is what I do.”

A hitman who’s in Bangkok to pull off a series of jobs falls for a local woman and bonds with his errand boy.

I did not think I was going to get through this whole thing.  Cage’s career has been on a constant down spiral ever since he refused to cut his hair and accept his receding hairline.

He did a worse job in Ghost Rider than Ben Affleck did in Daredevil; and I don’t think anybody thought that was possible. Peace to Affleck though who is directing more now and even manages to come off as believable in his latest roles (I can tell you have been working on your craft)

But I digress. Back to National Treasure part 2 star Nikolai Cagwoski.  Give it up already.  I hear you’re doing a comic book with your brother called Voodoo Child.  Maybe you should stick to that for a while, maybe make a movie out of it, give some black actors a shot.

I am looking forward to your role in the live action adaptation of the Kick Ass comic book.

Kick-Ass is an ongoing, creator-owned, American comic book series written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita, Jr. It is published by Marvel Comics under the company's Icon imprint.

I guess with a guy like you (a steady working actor the likes of Samuel L. Jackson) we are bound to get a shit load of crap movies in between your good ones.  I can’t think of one since Lord of War.

I’m gonna be watching Knowing after this…I’ll try to be merciful.

It’s funny that I have so much to write about a star I claim is fading from brilliance. Perhaps that’s because I loved Leaving Las Vegas so much or maybe it’s because Cage is a fellow comic book fan.

Anyhoo, Bangkok Dangerous is ok, it serves its purpose among the other assassin movies of its sort; namely allowing viewers to imagine the life of a professional killer with all its intricacies and professional hazards. It even has a little sequence where Cage instructs a civilian with the basics of how to be a killer. I give this stat stuffer of a movie 2/5 Bo-Ty’s.

sub-par action, bad scar tissue make-up, and that damn hair cut!

With a special HITMAN rater to remind us of a movie and even moreso a video game that did it better.

I spit this through the wire
deli meat piled on the kaiser
no soze, the suspects are unusual
can’t help how they moving you
got you not doing you
watch how you adore them
cuz it’s so haaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrd
pause…to ignore them
We see some flying high off their whips and things
Held up by puppet strings not by angel wings
Forever fronting phonies muppet queens and kings
Yet we still want those toys too!
Your own jealousy annoys you.
Kill that noise dude!
That there’s what little girls and boys do.
You got a choice too!
Timbuktu wasn’t built overnight
Foundations were forged over life
Find the remedies for self-destructive tendencies
And then eventually events that were always meant to be
Will consequentally present themselves to thee
And then you too can measure
Your worth by how many bags ain’t pleather
And how often you can jet away to change the weather
But the true cost to be paid
To be the boss, floss, and get laid
whenever you want moss, stones stay, type made
Is the loss of heart that you impart
Into the causes that touch yo!
Before yo! touched dough
So Ty, when you feel uninspired, tired,
Unadmired, even undesired or just bleh
Remember the mission mother fucker and adjust step
Cuz doing the right thang might require you to turn left
Live on through the words lil’ brother and cheat death

[insert battle cry here]

Bliggity-Black Ty y’all!

Full Time Writer?

so tasty, where can i get a box?

so tasty, where can i get a box?

I got a fortune out of a cookie last weekend…what are the odds?

It read: “Your sly nature will get you out of a tight spot.”

Instantly, I knew of the tight spot I was in:  struggling and if not for family would-be starving artist.

I knew I was sly.  Heck I’ve always known that.  My father was nicknamed Fox growing up.  If you know me, or have seen me in action at a Black Ty Affair, you might call me Fox 2.0

(ir)Regardless of my at least self-acknowledged sly-foxiness, I did not know exactly how I would apply that cunning, wily nature to my current situation.

Still, the fortune in hand, I felt the will to power-up and out of my hole swell inside my heart; renewing a vigor I thought forever lost to me.

Right on cue, I’m set up with a exclusive meeting with poet, storyteller, writer, and educator (as her card clearly states ;-)) Michelle Muir.

My boy Steele – who hooked up the meeting – had told me Michelle was like the Oracle – which as he made a point to notice, made him Morpheus, and me Neo – but even with his warning, I was not prepared for the overwhelming abode of the proven wordsmith.

Books, CDs, Vinyl and Posters both current and vintage lined the walls, accompanied by masks and other sculptures indicative of that righteous Afrocentric Nature that I had always identified with.

A few social appetizers and drinks later, I had failed miserably (in my eyes) to explain what my book was about and come off as anything more than a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a stan.  But I’m fairly hard on myself.

Michelle brightened things up with readings from two of her poems, both of which astounded me for their lyrical flow and force.  What a voice, I thought.

I remembered her saying earlier that she hosted a radio show, and now I had my proof.

I was taken aback by the whole night; even wondering to myself at the time just what my state of consciousness was, asleep or awake?

I did not sit back, mumble and jumble my words, while staring wide-eyed with mouth agape the whole night however, I did manage to take some useful notes from The Oracle’s advice on how to make it as a writer.

She did say the road is long, and that patience and persistence were vital to the journey.  “Don’t quit your day job.”  or in my case, “get a day job.” lol and make it one that you can love, even if just a little.

I am following up on her advice now, and already I am seeing ways that the sly-fox can maneuver so that he can live as he wants to live; as a full time writer.

The saga continues…

Tuck in your shirt and stay classy Internet,

Black Ty

special shouts and large ups go to my BFF YK, and Steele’s Mom and Sis, Kris and Steph…much love
